Light and Ice

A sonnet

The cold sharp teeth of winter’s threatening,
The brightly shining light that warms our hearts.
The dark and ice of winter’s beckoning,
Consumes our will to cheer the season's start.

We’ve fought against the dying of the light,
As long as people lived in colder climes.
The long migration north with no foresight,
Leaving Africa for new paradigms.

Long cold winters are a problem to solve.
To hibernate seems like a better plan.
In climate not long enough to evolve,
Alas, we only sleep as best we can.

To wake, in winter’s dark, is not as fun.
As life will be with return of the sun.
