For Today

A Sestina

I open the front door, the leaves are so green.
As I walk towards the truck, I hear the scratching of chickens.
My last minutes home, apart from humanity.
Enjoying the cool breeze, happy the sky is blue.
Letting nature recharge me, before I’m off to work.
It’s early morning, I’m waiting for the light.

The sun is rising, We have light.
The garden gleams, with many hues of green.
One more revery, before going to work.
The pecking order is being decided by the chickens.
I think of Columbus and how he sailed the ocean blue,
to the eternal suffering of humanity.

Stop, I won’t lose faith in humanity.
No, I won’t stop looking for the light.
I will try to smile when I’m feeling blue
Born privileged, no matter how little I possess, I won’t be green.
In every pot there is a chicken.
Maybe this thing really will work.

Some days I’m so upset, I almost don’t make it to work.
Seeing others denying people their humanity.
Some can’t afford eggs, never mind eating…
