Can She Welcome Them Back?

A sonnet

Can she welcome them back into her heart?
Crying so long she’s not cared for her soul.
Has it been too long? Much too late to start?
Only time, but still taking quite a toll.

She asked, “what did I do, what could I say?”
“Not even talk to me ever again?”
“I won’t get to feed the baby today.”
“Or read him a book, or ride on the train.”

Sometimes an answer is nowhere in sight.
It doesn’t much matter, how hard she tried.
But try still she will, with all of her might.
Long past the time she finds reason to cry.

Will she ever even let them back in?
“Of course”, she whispered, “what was I saying?”
